International Call-up for FOE's Lyson
Friday, 04 September 2009

Friend of Edusport's very own Lyson Zulu has received his first international cap, representing Zambia against Ghana in London.

Kalingalinga-born Lyson is currently studying in the UK on a sports scholarship, part-funded by the Zambian youth academy he started out with, EduSport. He is working towards a degree in Sports Performance at the University of Bath, which he will complete next year. Although his football with Team Bath has been going from strength to strength, one Tuesday in August, he received a totally unexpected phone call.

The Zambian FA had failed to secure visas for some of their regular team, so three UK-based Zambians playing student-level football were made an opportunity they could not refuse. Lyson was asked to play number 9, which is not his usual position, and was lining up against Francis Dickoh, the strong centre-back from Jacob Mulenga’s FC Utrecht, and Eric Addo who also plays in Holland for Roda JC. Despite this, Lyson played the entire match, although was disappointed with the 4-1 scoreline, although Zambia made it through the second half without conceding.

Is this only the beginning for Lyson Zulu? Although he would love nothing more than to represent his country again, for now, Lyson will be hitting the books and focusing on his education, as the new University term begins.

More on Lyson's international cap can be read here in the Lusaka Times.
